The eastern coast of Istria is 202.6 km long, with the associated islets 212.4 km long. The northern part of the eastern coast of Istria (so-called Liburnia, i.e. the cities of Brseč, Lovran, Opatija, Volosko, Matulji, Kastav) and the western part of the Kvarner Gulf gravitate towards Rijeka, so when the counties were created in 1993, that part of Istria was administratively assigned to the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County .
