Description

Red Island, also known as Sveti Andrija, got that name in the 90s of the last century. It is an island that was created by connecting two islets - the island of Sveti Andrija and the island of Maškin - with an artificial isthmus of dykes.

It was inhabited since prehistoric times. In the 6th century, the Benedictines built the first church on it and at the same time founded the first monastery. The central part of the church has been preserved together with its dome. Namely, in 1892, a cement and lime factory was founded on the island, so the church bell tower was used as the factory's chimney. As bricks were also produced on the island, the red-orange powder spread across the island, hence its name Red Island.

Over 180 different types of plants can be found on the island. Crveni otok contains various beautiful beaches. Along the entire island, Mediterranean maquis and coniferous forests prevail, hotels have been built with their flower parks and paths, and all of this comes together in one and more than attractive and beautiful environment.
